In our dire predicament of global climate and ecological crisis, everything is being left to national governments. The weakness of commitments at COP26 proves that reliance on national government is misplaced. What other pressure can we exert? Very little attention is focused on action at local government level. But everyone is at local level! In fact, local issues are often what loom largest in the minds of communities. People are concerned about global issues, but they are also concerned about the actions of their local authorities. If local authorities can be pressurised into taking serious action on environment, this sends a message to central government that can't be ignored.

Tax strikes are everywhere and at all levels. In the UK, Council tax strikes are happening in Bristol, Devon, North London, Buckinghamshire, Norfolk and East Sussex. Local communities are invited to withhold council tax and demand action on the things that matter to them. Instead of feeling disempowered and betrayed by elected representatives this is a way to ensure that your voice is heard. It is true community empowerment and you can join in.
